Faith as a Mustard Seed

Faith is such a hot topic. Have you ever heard any of these phrases?

You just need to have faith.

Your faith isn’t big enough.

You don’t have _________because you don’t have enough faith.

Then there’s the issue of what you put your faith in. Is your faith in your abilities? The ability of a man or woman? Or in God Himself? Maybe it’s mixture of all three.

The bible talks extensively on the issue of faith but I want to hone in on one scripture that I’ve heard preached about a million times. God showed me something new (to me) in it and I want to share that with you.

As we’ve been in this valley, let me tell you, my faith has been stretched, tested, and it has grown.

Here’s a little background about this scripture. The disciples had just gone out to minister and had tried to drive out demons in someone and they couldn’t do it. Now we could get into a conversation about other reasons it didn’t happen, but Jesus says this instead:

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

Matthew 17:20 (NKJV)

Faith AS A mustard seed. Or if you will, faith like a mustard seed.

Now we all know that mustard seeds don’t have “faith” the same way that we do. But anytime I’ve heard this scripture preached, the minister hones in on a couple of things. He or she focuses on the disciples’ lack of faith and the size of the seed.

You see, mustard seeds are tiny. They aren’t like walnuts. But they grow into very large trees.

But in this version of the bible, the NKJV, Jesus doesn’t say faith as SMALL as a mustard seed, he says faith AS A mustard seed.

What on earth does this mean?

Well, God showed me that faith, when given the right conditions, will grow, just like a mustard seed will grow over time in the garden.

You don’t have to have faith as small as a mustard seed, you need faith as a mustard seed.

Your faith starts out very small. Most people don’t instantly have the faith to start praying for the sick to be healed or for demons to be cast out. You need to give your faith the right conditions to grow.

Jesus continues on after this scripture to remind the disciples that these demons come out through prayer and fasting.

He gives them the tools they need to know how to increase their faith. He tells them how to increase their faith. He tells them how to make their own mustard seed of tiny faith grow into a large tree that can speak to mountains and see them cast into the sea.

Do you need to have mustard seed faith?

Let it grow.

Give your faith what it needs to grow. Spend time in prayer. Spend time fasting and seeking the Lord.

Have faith as a mustard seed.

On this journey, we’ve seen God’s hand of blessing and provision time and again in ways we never imagined. He has continually shown us that he has us in the palm of His hand.

Right now the check engine light is on in our van. This is important because we just had safety and emissions testing due. We know some of what’s going on with our van, but haven’t had the extra cash to get it fixed, so we’re just waiting. We know it needs at least $500 worth of work, but it could be more when they get in there.

We delayed our safety inspection for a month because we were so afraid it wouldn’t pass. But we finally just went in and did it. And you know what? It passed. Not only that, but then we were told that for emissions testing there were machines at exits nearby that read the emissions output, so if we drove by one of those it would take a photo of our license plate and send us a bill. BUT if we came into the mechanic for the emissions test, they would have to fix the check engine light issue first, before they could test.

You better believe we drove by one of those cameras. And something amazing happened. We got sent a bill for the emissions test PASSING. So praise the Lord we didn’t have to go into the mechanic and get everything fixed just yet.

What we thought would cost us $1000+ that we don’t have, ended costing less than $100, which the Lord provided for us.

Why do I share this? It’s a small reminder to us that God provides for our needs. We need the van. It’s our only car and how my hubby gets to and from work.

We had faith as a mustard seed and stepped out in faith not knowing HOW God would provide, but trusting that He would.

Do you need to have mustard seed faith?

Let it grow.

Give your faith what it needs to grow. Spend time in prayer. Spend time fasting and seeking the Lord.

Have faith as a mustard seed. Watch it grow.

Mustard seed faith isn’t about the size of your faith, it’s about letting it grow.
